Posted on November 27, 2020April 7, 2025 by Dharma Documentaries
A look at Nepalese Buddhism, its history and the importance of Lokesvara worship in the country.

The 108 Lokesvaras in Nepal

This is a series of 5 films made by the Ling Jiou Mountain temple in Taiwan about the history of Buddhism in Nepal, and espeically its representation through the 108 Lokesvaras, which are central to present day Nepali Buddhism.

The film traces the making of some reliefs and thangkas for the Taiwanese temple by local Nepalese masters, and meanwhile takes us on a historical tour of the country, its temples and artifacts, and explains the importance of the only surviving school of Sanskrit Buddhism.

The film also looks at the close connection between Nepali Buddhism and Vajrayana Buddhism in Japan and visits Ven Shucho Takaoka, who studied in nepal and now is helping to preserve and propagate this form of Buddhism both at home and in Japan.

The film also covers the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, which occurred while the sculptures and paintings were being prepared, and the efforts made by the major actors in the film to help with relief and rescue works in the country.
