Shi Ga Tse, Tibet (Expoza)

Posted on February 10, 2020December 27, 2020 by Dharma Documentaries
A visit to one of the most historical monasteries in Tibet, an active pilgrimage centre to this day.

Shi Ga Tse, Tibet

This is from a series of films by Global Television shot all over world, giving well photographed introductions to various places, of which we will be focusing on the ones of interest to Buddhists.

The films are quite light introductions to their subjects, mainly good photography, well chosen soundtracks, and a reasonable, but sometimes inaccurate, narration giving a cultural and historical introduction to its subject.

In the last of these films from Tibet for now, we visit the second largest city in Tibet, and particularly the Shi Ga Tse Dzong, a magnificent monastery that is the HQ of the Panchen Lamas.

Unlike many monasteries in Tibet this one survived the Chinese invasion and the Cultural Revolution virtually intact, so it has historical paintings and sculptures, as well as an arresting architectural edifice.

The film talks us through the the often turbulent history of the complex, and explains its position in modern Tibet, where it is the most active temple in the country.
