This is the second in this series of Buddhist stories retold by Margo McLoughlin in her inimitable style. This one is a Jātaka story () which follows the story of Citta and Sambhūta as they travel from life to life until they are destined for the Brahma worlds.
In the first life they are caṇḍāla, outcastes, who are good at mimicry and imitate brahmins so they can get an education; later they are reborn as antelopes, then as osprey, before being born as a brahmin and a prince. One renounces while the other rules, until they finally come together again and attain jhāna, which destines them for the higher worlds.
As always Margo manages to bring the whole story to life using only her words, a skill which is almost lost in our visual dominant societies. Give this half an hour of your time to see how a storyteller can weave pictures in your mind.
