The Eye-Opener

Posted on April 10, 2017April 10, 2017 by Dharma Documentaries
A meditative look at the work that goes into preparing a Arhat statue at a Tibetan monastery.

The Eye-Opener

This is a lovely short film following the work of Sonam Sherpa at the Tibetan Nalanda monastery in France over a period of months from June to November 2015 as he works at painting a sculpture of one of the 18 Arhat statues known in that tradition.

The film has no narration, but rather an interesting score, which provides the background as we watch the concentration and precision needed for the work to be successful over a long period of time.

At the end Sonam applies the last touch: the eye-opening of the statue, before placing it on the shelf and taking out the next statue to be prepared. It brings home the diligence and patience needed for this time of work, and the faith and devotion of the artists involved in traditional work.
