Women Who Make America 1: Awakening

Posted on November 25, 2013November 25, 2013 by Dharma Documentaries
The first part of a 3-part mini series giving a social history of the women's movement in America.

Women who make America

The American Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) has always excelled at making social histories, especially of life in America, and this new three part mini-series about the women’s movement once again provides a high quality and sensitive study of its subject.

Featuring mainly women’s voices throughout, the first of the series looks first at the base point representation of women in the 50s, and how that started to change as women became involved in other issues, like the fight for racial equality and the students’ movements in the 60s.

How women started to organise, and the many issues that were first named and then brought to the attention of people nationwide is the focus in this episode. Throughout the late 60s and early 70s there were many victories in the courts as discriminatory practices were abolished, and in civil life where new opportunities presented themselves.
