Ansel Adams: American Wilderness Photographer

Posted on July 27, 2012December 13, 2022 by Dharma Documentaries
A sensitive documentary about the great American wilderness photographer and environmentalist, Ansel Adams.

Ansel-Adams

This is a sensitive documentary made for the Sierra Club by Ric Burns about the great American wilderness photographer and environmentalist, Ansel Adams (1902 – 1984).

Many of Adams photographs have become truly iconic of the magnificent American wilderness areas, particularly around Yosemite National Park in California, where he began his photography and where he lived for many years.

With the help of his biographers, curators, family and friends the film traces his unusual upbringing in San Francisco, his first journeys to the wilderness areas and his struggle to choose between a musical and a photographic career.

Eventually he chose the latter and became one of the greatest photographers of his age, with a portfolio of works to his name which still have the power to take one’s breath away.

In later life he also became a great environmentalist, and struggling to preserve in reality the wildernesses he had preserved so well on film. From an early age he had worked with John Muir’s Sierra Club, and eventually he became the director of the organisation.
