The Monsanto Papers

Posted on May 3, 2019May 3, 2019 by Dharma Documentaries
A report from 2018 about the link between herbicides and cancer.

The Monsanto Papers

This is a recent report from Australian Television on the Monsanto Corporation and their Roundup product, which is the most widely used herbicide in history, being used by farmers all round the world.

Unfortunately when a treasure trove of documents, known as the Monsanto Papers, were made public it showed that the company – which was one of the first to introduce genetically-modified crops and patent them – had been involved in manipulation of scientific research and public opinion for decades.

Not long after that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released a report saying that there was evidence for a link between the active ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate, and cancer. This further resulted in a court case where a victim of cancer received compensation from the company.

This film looks at both sides of the argument. The company is given ample opportunity to defend itself, and farmers who rely on the herbicide are also interviewed. But it also gives airtime to those who have been affected the product.

The company, visited by a host of bad publicity, was acquired by the German company Bayer in 2018, and has since rebranded. Roundup though remains the most widely used herbicide available despite growing concerns it may not be safe.
