The Shwedagon Pagoda lies at the heart of Myanmar’s Buddhism, high on a hill in the previous capital of Yangon. This film gives an overview of the Pagoda’s history and centrality, and importantly, the way it is maintained by the efforts of 1000s of volunteers who work to make sure it is pristine in appearance.
We meet with volunteer associations, craftsmen and individuals who give their time for the temple’s maintenance, and we hear about the central role the pagoda plays in their devotion and lives. It is really quite inspiring that people have given years of their lives to the pagoda, all for the merit of doing good deeds.
I visited Shwedagon Pagoda myself in 2011, just after the election, and was very impressed with the good atmosphere in the pagoda, it was a little like stepping into a heaven, surrounded by good people with devout hearts. Wonderful. This film gives a good idea of the place, and hopefully will encourage you to visit for yourself.
