This is a German-Swiss movie made in 2012 about the escape from Tibet of the Dalai Lama’s supposed successor, called here the Golden Boy. The film opens with the Chinese authorities trying to assassinate the boy, but he and his playmate Tempa have swapped clothes and the rifleshot hits the wrong boy.
The Tibetans realise they must get the Golden Boy out of Tibet as a priority before the Chinese either kill or arrest him. A German woman, Johanna, who has been climbing in Tibet gets involved in smuggling Tempa out of Tibet, along with a number of other potential refugees.
They are pursued by Major Wang Bao, a ruthless Chinese officer, who will do what he has to to prevent the escape. The real meaning of Johanna’s involvement in the escape is only revealed towards the end of the film.
The film is beautifully shot, well-written and avoids most of the pitfalls it could have fallen into given the subject matter.
