Bactria and Ai Khanoun

Posted on September 19, 2025September 19, 2025 by Dharma Documentaries
A look at the ancient kingdom of Bactri and one of its most famous cities, Ai Khanoun.

Bactria and Ai Khanoun

These are two very interesting histories, first of the region of Bactria, and then of its most famous city, Ai Khanoun, by the historian Frank L. Holt. Bactria was populated by Greek kingdoms, after Alexander the Great withdrew from his eastern possessions and died on the way back to Greece.

Bactria was famed as a land with 1,000 cities in the ancient world, but nearly everything has been lost to time. One city that did survive until recently was the heavily fortified Ai Khanoun, which was suddenly emptied around 146 BC, for reasons unknown.

The videos are well illustrated with maps, illustrations and photographs. Unfortunately for us the city has been in the middle of a war zone since the mid-1970s, and has subsequently been looted and destroyed almost in its entirety.
