The Dark Mystery of Devadatta

Posted on September 18, 2026September 18, 2026 by Dharma Documentaries
The history and deeper meaning of the Devadatta story and its ramifications.

The Dark Mystery of Devadatta

This is a very good assessment of the Devadatta story, which is well-known, but not well understood by most Buddhists, who just think of him as an evil monk who tried to kill the Buddha.

Here the video tries to give a better historical understanding by pointing out we only have one side of the story preserved, and Devadatta’s own intentions are therefore inferred from a hostile source.

But it also points out why his attempts to replace the Buddha and his teaching not only didn’t work, but were misconceived. In this is the most valuable lesson.

Another well-written and intelligent video from the Buddhist Legacy channel. It would be interesting to find out who is behind the videos. Certainly they could be improved—most noticeably on the AI voice over and the sometimes poor and carelessly edited visuals—but even as they are they provide a good resource on many topics.

if the video does not appear on the page, try reloading the page; and if that doesn’t work, leave a comment so I can update the page (the comment is not published)
