Series Three of the Mark of Empire looks at the maritime kingdoms, beginning with Srivijaya.

The Mark of Empire 9, Srivijaya

This is the first of the 3rd series of the Mark of Empire series narrated by Peter Lee. I have already featured the first series on this website (the second series was, in my estimation, less interesting, and so has not been included).

This episode looks at the Maritime Kingdom of Srijijaya, which was centered on Sumatra, but spread its influence from Thailand in the north, to Java in the south.

One of the central monuments of Srijijaya is in Java at Borobudur, probably built by the Sailendra Kingdom, a tributory of Srijijaya at the time, and that is where this episode begins.

Over the course of the program we visit Palenbang, Maura Jambi and other, especially maritime sites in Sumatra, and see how the lost kingdom has left its mark in the culture of the region, in everything from archeology, textiles, shipping and food.
