A look at how the Yungang Grottoes are inspiring present day musicians, dancers and designers.

Yungang Grottoes 04, Reforms by Two Saints

This week’s episode looks at various topics, including how musicians and dancers were portrayed in the later Yungang Grottoes, the instruments they played, and the movements they recorded on the walls, and how this is inspiring musicians, dancers and even fashion designers in the present day.

We then look at the extensive inscriptions that were carved in the caves, and how they in turn have influenced Chinese calligraphy with their clear and easy style, which was characteristic of the later Northern Wei dynasty. We also again look at some of the twin caves, and how they reflected happenings in the court.

Altogether we can see just how much the Buddhist styles of yesteryear are now very much back in style, and providing inspiration for people in present day China. All of which gives hope for the future of Buddhist arts, and Buddhist influenced arts in the future.
