In the remote hills of Nepal people still go collecting honey from the hives made on the cliff faces. It is a dangerous occupation and is only undertaken with the blessings of the protective god Rongkemi who rules this work.
The film mainly follows Maule Dhan Rai who has had a dream which empowers him to collect the honey from the bees. The honey itself is used as a purgative medicinally, and is quite toxic, and even deadly if taken in anything but small quantities.
We see the preparations that are made before heading to the hills, the amazing rope ladders they have built to access the cliff faces, and some incredible footage from a camera the gatherer carries with him while collecting.
We also hear about the folk legends that support the practice, and learn a lot about the people involved, and their community, and the strange fate of those who do the work.
Shot in association with National Geographic, this film has all the hallmarks their work: a wonderful story, beautiful photography, and great editing all come together to make a memorable film.
