The Glory of Dunhuang 6, The Dunhuang Family

Posted on August 6, 2021August 6, 2021 by Dharma Documentaries
The sixth of ten episodes about Dunhaung, looks at the life of everyday folk in the city.

The Dunhuang Family

In 2007 a small but important document was returned from Paris to China, it outlines a land dispute that was brought to the courts 1,000 years ago, and how it was settled. Working with this as a basis, this week’s episode looks at the life of the ordinary person at the time of the Tang and Song dynasties.

It also uses the scenes from everyday life recorded on the walls of Dunhuang to get a better picture of how things would have looked, and what things were available to the people. From these small details a picture has been built that let’s us understand and helps us piece together what life would have been like back then.

Once again we see the importance of the preservation of manuscripts and murals at Dunhuang, allowing us a glimpse of everyday life in distant times.
