This is another in the Japan Spirit and Form series, hosted by Suichi Kato, and produced by NHK in the late 1980s.
In this week’s episode Kato looks at the development of Ink Painting in Japan, after it was introduced from China.
Ink painting is a very special kind of meditative painting as, unlike, say, oil painting, you only get one chance when you lay brush to paper.
The film also compares Japanese ink painting with the development of late expressionism and early abstractism in western art, especially looking at the works of Wassily Kandinsky.
While discussing these matters we also get to see some of the masterpieces of Japanese and Chinese ink paintings along the way.
