The Making of a Novice Monk (Wat Ban Khun)

A look at the daily life of young novices in this monastery in northern Thailand.

The Making of a Novice Monk (Wat Ban Khun)

This is the second of these very well made and interesting films from Phra Nick Keomahavong, this one looking at the life of young novices in Wat Ban Khun in Chiang Mai district, northern Thailand, under the leadership of Phra Kru Sangworasitthichot.

This monastery has around 200 novices, many of whom are drawn from the hill tribes in the borders of the country, and looks at the daily routine of their lives, and the values that the training aims to instill.

For some of these young monks this is the only way they will get a secondary education, and after some years they will return to lay life, but for others the monastic life will become a lifetime pursuit.

The Pāḷi training in this monastery seems to be outstanding, but they also study Thai and English. They learn meditation, the values of contributing to community life, and various skills in daily living.
