The Heart of Taoism 7, The Way to Keep Fit

Posted on December 31, 2021December 3, 2022 by Dharma Documentaries
The seventh episode in this series looking at Taoism looks at Taoist ideas around health and balance.

The Heart of Taoism 7, The Way to Keep Fit

Taoism has long been connected with health practices, being based, as it is, on balance, natural living and avoidance of stress and ambition. That is the positive side of the Taoist outlook. On the negative side has been its connection with alchemy and the quest for physical immortality.

This episode looks at these phenomena, and how they have played out – and are still playing out – in the Taoist context in China. This has led to Taoist medicine, and practices like Qi Gong and Tai Qi, which seek to keep the body and mind healthy and harmonious.

This episode also talks about the need to balance Yin and Yang, and the foundation of these teachings in Lao Tze and other great writers of the Taoist movement.

Why do you say, “On the negative side has been its connection with alchemy and the quest for immortality”? You may as well also say that Buddhism’s quest for liberation is negative, and Vajrayana is negative. It is a silly comment.

It may not have been clear, but I was summarising the argument of the episode itself.

        Ok, understood, sorry.

It’s a pity that Daoism is so misunderstood.
