This is another of these excellent and informative videos by Walid Haddad. This one concerns the Temple of the Soul’s Retreat, which is found in Hangzhou on the eastern coast. It is one of the largest zen temples in China.
The film walks us through some of the highlights of the temple, which includes the Flying Peak Hill, which has hundreds of sculptures carved into its limestone walls. There are also various halls for the Heavenly guardians, Mahavira, The Medicine Buddha and the 500 Arahats.
The beauty of the film is it not only shows us the sights, which are splendid in themselves, but also gives lots of information about the meaning of the sculptures, their iconography and place in Chinese Buddhism also.
