The painted sculptures at Dunhuang are some of its most precious art works, and there are several thousand of them, making the collection one of the most valuable in the world.
The rock in the Dunhuang area was not suitable for carving, so a different way of sculpting had to be used. The sculptures are made of frames covered in a mixed clay and then painted.
Some of these sculptures are truly sublime in the expressions and feelings they manage to convey, and it is almost a miracle that they survived down the ages when similar works were lost.
We also see how 3D modelling is being used to bring the splendour of the original works back to life by recreating the sculptures in their undamaged form and repainting them based on original models.
