Following on from the film looking at novice life in a pirivena in Sri Lanka last week is this film in much the same vein from Myanmar.
Again this short film has no narration as such, and only one fairly incomprehensible interview, although there are some subtitles giving information about the life and society.
The film appears to be filmed around Mandalay and Amarapura and is basically just glimpses of the monk’s life as it unfolds during the day, from almsround, meditation and relaxation.
We also see some of the monks’ requisites being prepared, inside and outside of the temples, and we also get a short look at the life of the nuns as well.
It’s not clear how close the film-maker was with his subjects and they often seem to be looking suspiciously at camera, but nevertheless it does give people an insight into monastic life in Myanmar (here called Burma).
